Acupuncture

Traditional Chinese medicine that involves inserting very thin needles into specific points on the body along meridian points. It's based on the belief that the body has a flow of energy, called Qi, which flows through pathways called meridians. When the flow of Qi is blocked or unbalanced, it can cause physical or emotional issues.

This therapeutic modality is a comprehensive, hands-on approach promoting physical, emotional, and energetic well-being. The practice incorporates:

Myofascial Release (MFR): Fascia is the web of connective tissue that can be found in every part of our bodies, all down to the cellular level. Fascia is not only incredible for how it maintains our structure, but it also holds physical, mental and emotional patterns, experiences and memories. Because fascia is a connected web, when one area of the fascia is “tight” (in response to anything: injury, surgery, chronic desk work, stress, trauma, growing/birthing a baby, being born, etc.), that tight area of fascia then begins to push/pull other areas in the body and we feel mounting discomfort/ dysfunction. Myofascial Release (as taught by John Barnes) is the slow, holistic hands-on practice of using techniques including compression and traction to release these fascial restrictions in order to help a person feel much more free in their body, mind & spirit and make space for new patterns. This practice is done with as much skin contact as possible. It is suggested that clients wear sports bras/shorts/underwear and they will have the option of being draped with a sheet and/or blanket for their comfort.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD): The Lymphatic system is imperative to our immune function. When we experience an injury or surgery or are exposed to toxins (i.e. mold and more) or even just to stress, our lymphatic fluid can stagnate and even at times develop into edema (visible swelling). Through gentle, rhythmic strokes in the precise directions in and at the same pace with which the lymph flows, this modality improves lymphatic function and speeds up the healing process so our bodies can return to the filtering and nutrient-transporting processes that keep us healthy. MLD is also a great modality for those looking for a very gentle approach that returns us to a parasympathetic state and can thus provide deep relaxation. This approach is done with as much skin contact as possible under a professionally draped sheet and/or blanket.

Cranial Sacral Therapy (CST): Cranial Sacral Therapy is a gentle practice that is characterized by the therapist offering gentle sustained holds to areas around the head, spine and pelvis. All of these areas comprise the Cranial Sacral System, which houses the central nervous system of the body. CST can be effective treatment for most any condition, but this therapy can be especially helpful with regard to treating headaches/migraines, TMJ disorder, insomnia, anxiety and depression. CST can be done with the receiver completely clothed.

Reiki: This energy healing modality is remarkably calming and gentle, and it is safe for anybody to receive. By tuning in to the universal life force energy all living beings share, in this modality the therapist gently places their hands on our just above areas in the body where energy has become stagnant, is lacking or is in need of healing of some kind. Over time, the energy from the therapist’s hands can help to shift the energy in the receiver’s body to achieve greater balance and flow. Reiki can be helpful for those undergoing medical treatment for all kinds of conditions as well as anyone dealing with anxiety, depression, stress and/ tension. Reiki can be done with the receiver completely clothed.

Gunjan is an experienced massage therapist, Reiki healer, and esthetician who has been working with clients for over 15 years. From a very young age, she has had a passion for helping others.

Her journey into the world of holistic healing began with Reiki, where everything instantly “clicked.” She immersed herself in training, attending weekly healing sessions with a Reiki master and eventually earning her Karuna Reiki Master certification.

Fueled by her passion for energy work and a deep desire to help others, Gunjan expanded her expertise to massage therapy. She studied under her guru in Mumbai, learning aromatherapy, facials, and massage techniques before refining her skills further and getting licensed in the U.S.

Gunjan believes in blending Eastern and Western healing traditions—combining the intuitive with the technical, the energetic with the physical, the “thinking” with the “feeling.” Her approach is rooted in love, intention, and a commitment to service. She sees healing as a two-way path: while she helps others release physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual tension, she also experiences profound personal growth through her work in helping others heal.

By integrating massage and esthetician services with healing energy and her homemade healing oils, Gunjan creates a deeply restorative experience that allows her clients to find balance, release, and renewal.

Elsa Guenther is a bodyworker (licensed massage therapist) and yoga teacher whose approach is to meet you where you are—physically, mentally & emotionally— in each new moment, and her work is anything but a typical massage. Elsa found bodywork as a client in 2015 when she suffered a painful rib and jaw injury while regularly wearing a corset in a theatrical production. The bodywork modality that helped Elsa to feel better than she had felt even before the injury and that profoundly changed her life for good was the John Barnes Myofascial Release (MFR) approach. Myofascial Release uses hands-on tools including compression and traction to help release fascial restrictions storing physical, mental and emotional tension/trauma. Years of receiving Barnes’ work and benefiting from releasing stuck body-mind patterns led Elsa to become a licensed massage therapist and Barnes MFR practitioner. She has been proudly offering this work professionally since 2019, and in the years since, Elsa has studied and now also offers Manual Lymphatic Drainage (Vodder method), Cranial Sacral Therapy (Milne approach) and Reiki. With these techniques, Elsa has been able to help people with a variety of concerns; from those who live with chronic pain or navigate chronic illness or cancer, to those with major past traumas or who have experienced car accidents, are pre or post-surgery to professional athletes, to those looking to relieve mold toxicity and more; Elsa is happy to treat and has experienced wonderful results treating nearly anyone with specific areas of pain or who just want to move and feel better. And as a mother, Elsa has a special place in her heart for working with expectant and postpartum mothers preparing/recovering from labor as well as babies healing from birth/navigating their milestones and growing children. Elsa is also a certified yoga instructor and has joyfully taught yoga in many places since 2014; While yoga has so much to offer, she loves the meditative movement most for the way it helps people to breathe better, be less reactive/more intentional and to move in community. She is forever learning and is continually grateful to be a part of so many healing journeys… every single one is important. Elsa believes that when we feel better in our bodies, we are better to ourselves and to each other, and that has extraordinary ripple effects.

James Pedersen is a licensed acupuncturist and is board certified by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) and a member of the Illinois Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ILAAOM). He graduated with honors from the Midwest College of Oriental Medicine in Chicago, which is one of the first established and accredited acupuncture colleges in the country.

Jim’s interest in Chinese Medicine began while studying the various martial arts of TaeKwon-Do, Tang Soo Do, Tai Chi, and Qi Gong. Watching many martial artists, including a few renown masters, control their energy, and the energy of others; Jim began to see the incredible power of the body, mind, and spirit. In Chinese Medicine, the body, mind, and spirit are at the core of healing. Jim has always been a believer in the body’s own capacity to heal and acupuncture proved to be an effective form of therapy that encouraged that natural healing process without negative side effects. After experiencing the powerful effects of acupuncture first hand, he decided to make a career change to become an acupuncturist in order help others experience the benefits of this incredible healing art.

The approach Jim uses in treating his patients is both individualistic and holistic. He carefully develops a clear, concise evaluation of each patient’s overall health by asking them questions, listening to them, watching them, and feeling their radial pulse. From this, a comprehensive treatment plan that addresses the presenting complaint and the root cause of the condition is developed. He uses not only acupuncture but also other traditional techniques within the scope of Chinese Medicine to effectively treat a wide range of conditions that stem from both physical and emotional imbalances. In addition, he believes in providing his patients with the necessary tools and information needed to take a proactive role in their own health. By counseling patients in diet, exercise, lifestyle, and awareness and relaxation techniques, effective and lasting results are achieved.

On a more personal note, Jim is the father of three incredible boys, and the husband of a loving wife who helps provide his strength and vision.

Libby’s journey into Chinese medicine began serendipitously when a gua sha treatment for a severe cold provided rapid and astonishing relief. She also led her own private practice in Wicker Park before relocating to Virginia Beach to support her husband’s military career. There, she further honed her expertise while working at the Edgar Cayce Association for Research and Enlightenment and JenCare Senior Medical Center, a medical center serving seniors where she offered acupuncture to complement their medical care and taught Tai Chi to the patients.

Libby seamlessly bridges Eastern and Western healing paradigms, offering compassionate, individualized care that empowers her patients to achieve true wellness. In addition to acupuncture and herbal medicine, she integrates other modalities such as electrical stimulation, gua sha, moxibustion, mindfulness practices, breathwork, nutritional and lifestyle coaching, energy work, and other tools to help her patients achieve balance and lasting well-being.
